1st XV - Last Gasp Victory vs Old Priorians - 35-34
I am literally running out of superlatives to describe some of the rugby this season. Another hugely exciting game, with a last grasp penalty to win. Everyone was buzzing after a truly cracking entertaining match.
The story of the match was as follows…
We went three tries up after 20 minutes, no conversions so 15-0. However it felt we were lucky to be that far ahead as Old Priorians were strong. Sure enough seconds later 15-7. Three minutes later another OPs score, now 15-14. Joe Thomas got the fourth try for bonus point just before half time to edge back ahead, scores at HT 20-17.
Then it was all momentum with OPs and they scored a further three tries in the second half to go 20-34 up. There was less than ten minutes left on the clock and everything going against us for that period. We emptied the bench and we started to make some inroads. Joe Thomas with his second try of the match under the posts, 27-34. Two minutes left and a yellow to OPs, we score in the corner, missed conversion to be 32-34. Last play, we retain the kick off and work our way up field, a penalty to us, too far for a kick, so go for touch. Win the lineout, work our way across the field but great defence from OPs. Penalty to us!! Our young scrum half Stan Rideout steps up to take the kick, kicks it sweetly through the post - cue pandemonium, 35-34 win!
What a fantastic finish from the team who really are punching above their weight. A special mention to Joe Thomas who was named MOTM on his 50th cap and a special mention to current Colts Captain Freddie Taylor who came off the bench for his 1st XV debut. Freddie did not look out of place in the slightest, in fact he made a positive impact in the set pieces and has undoubtedly a strong future ahead.
Sunday Rugby:
It was county cup matches this weekend. Some postponements and byes but U15s sadly lost to Milton Keynes and now drop into the plate. The U13s had two matches, the Bulldogs beat Ampthill A’s 35-15 and the Bears beat Windsor Bs 65-5. Some fine results from a strong age group.
Rugby Next Weekend - Women Away vs Reading:
After all that excitement thankfully the mens teams have a break to enjoy the Autumn Internationals on Saturday and to give our hearts a well earned rest. However, the Women’s team are playing Reading away on Sunday, in the league, kick off at 2pm. We are currently two wins from two in the league in our debut season, so if anyone can afford some time to go and support, I know it will be really appreciated.
Autumn Internationals all Live:
Next Saturday there is a fantastic line up of matches with England vs All Blacks at 3pm, Wales Japan at 5pm and Ireland Australia at 8pm. All matches on live at the club.
Fitz Harding - England A Debut:
Congratulations again to Fitz who won his first international honours on Saturday playing for England A vs New Zealand. A fantastic inspiring story of a young man who came up through the ranks from U6s at Beaconsfield and only a few seasons ago was playing Durham University 4th team. It really shows how everything is possible and all our young players can follow their dreams.
BRFC Legends from the Past:
Russ Bolton wants to introduce a BRFC legend concept to the club, where we nominate the five players who have had the greatest impact on the jersey, per position, since the inception of the club in 1953. This is a fantastic idea and will provide the current players with a connection to the past.
Selection will however clearly be highly contentious, we aren’t necessarily looking for the best XV but the players who had the biggest impact. We started the process off on Saturday asking everyone at the lunch to nominate their club legends. I’ve already got quite a list to work with but I want more nominations. So if you have a Facebook account keep an eye out for the first few suggestions and provide (constructive) feedback.
Lunches - Warning Book Early:
We have two big lunches coming up which I’m expecting to be over-subscribed. Sponsors lunch on 29th November and our Christmas lunch on 20th December vs Windsor. These will both be advertised this week so please do book early to avoid disappointment. Spaces are limited.
Enjoy your week
